Anglicare The Ponds

Project Overview

Anglicare The Ponds Village is a vibrant Retirement Village located in the Sydney’s leafy Hills District. Set on over 32.6 acres of manicured grounds, the Village comprises an expansive community of retirement villas, nursing facility, all-access community buildings, dedicated walking paths, and much-loved communal outdoor spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.

What makes this project so special, is that it is more than a contractual partnership. Over a three-year period, our team has come to build personal relationships with the majority of the 350 onsite residents, many of whom are avid gardeners.

Challenges

When our Green by Nature team first started our contract at the site, it presented a range of operational and environmental challenges for us to overcome. Outdated systems, old school methods and improper scheduling were key components of why Anglicare was not looking its best. We found that there were restricted use of herbicides such as glyphosate which required alternative weed control methods. Frequent movement of indoor plants and overwatering would stress plants and complicate regular care. Seasonal leaf drops from large trees increased maintenance requirements during winter, while shaded areas suffered from prolonged dampness, promoting moss and dieback. Access to irrigation was also limited due to landlord controls, impacting timely repairs and requiring increased manual watering. The site presented several operational challenges. Maintenance activities were labour-intensive and scheduling was often inconsistent due to the complexity of the grounds. In addition, dual approval processes from both the resident horticulturist and the site’s property management team required ongoing program adjustments and flexibility in service delivery.

Innovative Solutions

To get around these constraints, Green by Nature focused on implementing new and innovative ways of working to elevate this site even higher. One of our solutions to overcome the labour intensive tasks consisted of the introduction of eco-friendly alternatives for weed control, fixed scheduling and maintenance plans,

and closely monitors plant health to inform irrigation needs.

Indoor plant rotations are tracked and adjusted to suit usage patterns across communal rooms, and contingency plans allow quick responses to missed or rescheduled visits. Green waste is mulched onsite where possible, reducing landfill and supporting soil health. Seasonal fertilising, targeted pruning, and hand-watering in problem areas help maintain consistent landscape quality despite variable environmental conditions.

Sustainability Initiatives

Organic mulching of garden beds reduces moisture loss, suppresses weeds, and supports healthier soil biology. Eco-friendly products such as Slasher are used in place of conventional herbicides to meet Anglicare’s chemical restrictions, while manual weeding practices help protect residents and the surrounding environment. Green waste is repurposed onsite where possible, reducing reliance on external disposal and minimising landfill. Efficient irrigation scheduling, combined with close monitoring, limits water waste and supports long-term landscape health. These initiatives align with Anglicare’s broader environmental objectives while supporting sustainable horticultural practices.

Project Outcome

The outcome is a well-presented, functional, and calming landscape that supports the wellbeing of residents and staff alike. Despite environmental constraints and site access challenges, the Green by Nature team consistently delivers a high standard of care that enhances the visual appeal and usability of the outdoor and indoor spaces. Through strong collaboration with Anglicare’s onsite teams and a proactive, flexible approach, the project continues to meet operational goals while maintaining consistency across all seasons. The result is a thriving, sustainable environment that reflects the values of both the client and the contractor.

Collaboration

Collaboration is central to success at The Ponds. Regular communication with the on-site resident horticulturist and Anglicare’s property managers ensures maintenance aligns with lease conditions, events, and seasonal needs. Services are carefully scheduled around open days and community functions such as the Mayor’s Christmas Party, requiring the team to adjust operations and enhance presentation before key dates. Close coordination also allows efficient navigation of restricted areas, meetings, and other building activities that affect access.

Community Impact

Well-maintained landscapes and vibrant indoor plants create a calming and welcoming atmosphere for residents, staff, and visitors. The gardens contribute to resident wellbeing and support Anglicare’s commitment to high-quality living environments. By adapting to challenges with a flexible and sustainable approach, Green by Nature plays a key role in enhancing the natural surroundings of The Ponds community.
