Transforming a pristine playing surface into a Supercross track—and back again—is no small feat, and our team at HBF Park went from hosting the World Supercross event one week to being ready for an A-League Game the next. In preparation for these events, our team planned a smooth and efficient transition process to make sure that they could provide the best service across the two events.

The team began by carefully refining the turf nutrition plan in preparation for the Supercross event. This involved slowing the growth of the grass, using a moisture probe, and applying preventative treatments such as fungicides and anti-transpirants. These steps ensured the turf remained healthy and sweat-free, even while buried under layers of dirt. The track construction began with over 300 trucks delivering 6,500m³ of dirt, laid over geo fabric and ply boards to protect the playing surface. By the night before the event, the Supercross Canadian crew had the track ready, setting the stage for two days of action-packed racing, including a sold-out night.

Once the event wrapped, the real work began. Over two nights, the dirt was removed, the geo fabric rolled up, and the playing surface exposed. Recovery included watering, grooming, aerating with solid tines, and applying fertiliser and wetting agents to revitalise the turf. Repairs were made to high-traffic areas with 40m³ of hybrid turf, which required hand watering to survive the Perth heat. With not a lot of time until the next A-League fixture, we focused on restoring the surface, double-cutting patterns, installing goals, and marking lines to ensure the pitch was in top condition. The transformation was challenging but rewarding, and as always amazing work from our team showcasing their care and effort behind every step of the process.
